Just Jot It January 16th – What #SoCS
Jot – What?
My hearing keeps getting worse, so this is a word I use frequently. The feeling of constantly stepping closer to someone, and repeatedly saying, “What?” is utterly humbling.
One day, I will have to get hearing aides. Then, I won’t be able to have them in, as the family talks on their cell phones. Will I ever be able to hear? I don’t think so, because someone is always on a phone. Ugh!
My family is so sick of me saying “what?” they just stop trying. Once I start -they stop. I guess, if you don’t get it the first time -it wasn’t worth hearing.
When my dad stopped hearing well, he began sleeping most of the time. The TV couldn’t be turned up loud enough, for him to enjoy it. He loved TV. I do too! If I’m not writing -it is my escape -or a great book.
The Shannara series is on VUDU, right now. I am a huge fan of Terry Brooks. When they first announced they would be doing a TV show, I was a little disappointed. I’ve always wanted his books to be made into movies, like the other greats: Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Hunger Games.
Still, I am not disappointed in the show. They’ve had to twist the story around, to help fill in the many details you wouldn’t understand. Although, it holds true to the flavor of Terry Brooks original story. The male characters -are not as ‘d envisioned. I saw Will, as long and lanky. I pictured Allonon as being truly tall, and a darker looking face. He doesn’t surprise me enough. Allonon always catches me by surprise, in the book. Their trying to convey that, but it isn’t working. I suppose they will get better, as time goes by. I do like the guy who showed up on episode 3, and the girls are just as I would have seen them, in my own imagination.
My poor daddy -at least, in the silence of my mind -I have writing.
I deal with this all the time, with my husband, who has 40% loss in one ear, from my dad who is 77 and now read lips, and my FIL who has to regularly have his ears flushed. My husband does well to have his ears professionally flushed as well, but he’s stubborn and procrastinates.

Ear flushing. Is that to cleaning out the wax? Never heard of it. I wonder if it would help me.

Yes, sometimes the regular MD will do it, but mostly they refer out to an ENT. It’s effective if the wax build-up is the problem.

I am wondering if the years of call centre headphones started this process in me. I seem to be watching those speaking to me quite carefully.

My father has lost most of his hearing too. We’ve grown accustomed to the Whats and the huhs and the loud tv. I don’t mind, so long as I still get to hear his laughter as he watches some of his old favorite shows… like Hogan’s Heroes and The Beverly Hillbillies. Enjoy the Shannara series… Terry Brooks’ stories are awesome 🙂 Cheers!

Those were some of our favorites -also. He really loved old westerns and the last couple of years of his life -he really tried to watch every western he could find. I think he wanted to remember….

I’m sure they would have. Cherish these days. They end so quickly. The last week and a half, I sat at my father’s bed side, only spending a couple of hours each evening, to make dinner for my family. It was a hard time, but there were moments…they were just what we both needed. I wouldn’t trade a moment of those moments.

I am indeed cherishing this time with him… I lived away from home for over 25 years and rarely came home to visit during those first 15+ years because I didn’t get along with my mother. By the time she’d passed, I was living 1000 miles away. It’s only been in the past year that I’ve come home and get to spend quality time with my dad again. We were so close when I was a kid and it is great to be close with him again.
